If you have been reading through this site, you may
have noticed a pattern emerging so far as construction is concerned.
Early in the year is the best time to layout and execute work on the
track. With the plants all dormant and cutback, the best opportunity
to actually get to the track is late Winter.
This year has been no different, other than the very long period of
daily rain. It doesn't stop construction but it's very muddy and
sometimes hard to get a firm base. January did slip by without much
new. But plans were being made.
The Meziadin passing track was not long enough to handle the Tank
Trains, and needed an extension. Rolling meets were fun, but
seesawing passed was getting very tricky.
The re-construction would lengthen Meziadin, relocate the mainline
away from opposing track and give the opportunity to extend the yard
at Bulkley Station. Bulkley Station is located undercover, behind
the shed and provides covered storage. Longer trains need longer
storage tracks.
Construction didn't take long once the base materials were obtained.
The change adds about 6 feet to each of the tracks at Meziadin.
Wiring for the moved switch still needs to be done. But the
side-by-side pictures below clearly shows the change. Those chunks
of plywood attached to the fence shield the rearmost track, which
dives into the Edziza Tunnel, from the constant fall of cedars
boughs which can cause real trouble if dragged into the tunnel.
